Lunatic Fringe Alpacas Logo

Hello from Donna and John Tauscher and Lunatic Fringe Alpacas, a small alpaca farm in Colstrip, Montana. We have a few breeding alpacas, some pet alpacas, a few alpacas that board with us and some alpacas for sale. We shear our small herd of alpacas each year in the spring. We send the prime blanket fiber to the Alpaca Fiber Coop of North America (AFCNA), where it is blended with fiber from alpacas all across North America and then made into alpaca products which we sell from our Ranch Store. We also purchase alpaca products for resale from a small family operated company that assists indigenous peoples from South America by offering their alpaca merchandise for sale.

Alpaca Information

Alpacas are small, gentle relatives to camels and llamas. They are about 36" tall at the withers and weigh around 150 pounds. Their lifespan is about 15-20 years. Raising alpacas as alternative livestock is safe and easy as they only have front teeth on the bottom and a dental pad on the top of their mouths. They have two-toed padded feet that are easy on the environment. They originated on the high Andean Plateau and mountains of South America. The ancient Incan civilization developed this domestic animal over 5000 years ago for their wonderful fur called fiber.
